The Challenge

KAYAK wanted us to redesign their whole website & mobile app with a vision of bringing the world into your pocket. They wanted us to design a website that can provide the most complete real-time information to its users and provides a broad range of services. Our goal was to create a website that gives more flexibility to the user and is easy-to-use, but still intuitive. We helped them to create a solid option to research prices and pulls information from a variety of sources.

Rethink

We had to think about the design of KAYAK that makes it more consistent across different platforms. The aim of the redesign was to create a more universal and comprehensive consumer experience across all Kayak platforms for which we broke the applications down to its core features. During working sessions with the client, we identified the key tasks for each persona and created a scenario for them. This exercise helped us identify features and functionality.

Ideation and wireframing

We identified the primary flows and started elaborating the concepts in Sketch (the design tool) after making user scenarios. We make our theoretical concepts more tangible to our clients by illustrating the idea on a whiteboard. Then, for testing, we convert our wireframes into clickable prototypes. In return, we were able to take the feedback and iterate quickly, focusing purely on interactions and process flows. Our team also had scheduled weekly presentations with the client, keeping us on move quickly and involve the client every step of the way.

Concept Exploration

When it came to visual design exploration, we had the freedom to diverge from their existing brand guidelines and push the designs to the next level. Working on different mood boards, our two designers produced two drastically different visual concepts. We presented them to the client and they selected one main concept and picked specific UI elements from others. Our designers integrated the user’s feedback and created a new design as the base for the later visual design production.

Design, Test, & Repeat

Mobile App User Interface (UI)

Result

We provided a unified platform where a user can search hundreds of travel sites with one click and find the right price for them. We helped their users cut-through all the information easily by comparing prices and deals. We introduced a simple layout with a user-friendly environment. Hence, updating and redesigning the Kayak web and mobile app provided a better user experience and helped it in making long-term competitive.
